One has to wonder what effect this exhibition had on the generation of Pop Artists to come along in the 1960s. Putting cartoons in a museum must have blown away the Ab Ex artists and those struggling with the messy emotionalism of unbridled (or untethered) paint. Good find. Photos might provide some fodder for my own work. Thanks...

Thanks for the post. These photos are priceless. I wonder if the museum has a more elaborate set of photos. They usually record everything for their archives.

Steve: Suprisingly some of the artwork I see in these photos still exists today. I guess since they had had it mounted and exhibited, they kept better care of some of these pieces. I remember scanning in one of the Magoo pages up on display from Mike Glad. I'll try to dig through my scans and see if I can pull it out.

Ward: It was a tough decision, but these photos aren't in the book. There were so many amazing shots of the artists at work in the studio that we decided to focus on them instead of showing museum photos. But that's why there's this blog...to share things that I can't fit into other projects.

Now THIS is the way to exhibit animation! What a great set up. Too bad these aren't in color. That would've been very cool to see how color played a big part in this exhibit. Many thanks for posting these, Amid! Are we to assume that these will be featured in your new UPA book? (By the way, I still need to order that....)

In the Magoo photo, the panel on the right consists of Hubley redesigns of Magoo done about the time of Barefaced Flatfoot. I have a stack of sketches that are very similar to these. Great post!
