101 Dalmatians Color Keys by Walt Peregoy
Since the last post here a few months back was about Marc Davis’s work on 101 Dalmatians, I thought it’d be interesting to highlight the work of another amazing artist who worked on the film: Walt Peregoy (b. 1925). Peregoy was the film’s color stylist and his contributions are deeply felt throughout the film. His work is discussed in greater depth in the Cartoon Modern book. The book also has some of his color keys, but there were many more that I couldn’t fit in. Below is a collection of his work from the film. Click for bigger versions.

Walt Peregoy is one of my favorite artists working at one of my favorite periods at Disney. They’re stunning and stunningly beautiful. There’s nothing so wonderful as a great artist who knows the craft of animation inside-out at work on a good project.
If I didn’t know better I’d have thought they were designs for theatrical sets. Thanks so much for posting them.

Brilliant! Peregoy remains my favorite of all the Disney color stylists. Not that I don’t admire Mary Blair, for example, because I do. It’s simply that I find Peregoy to be much more sophisticated and brave. Michael is right - these could easily be Boris Aaronson or Eugene Lee theatrical designs, and the key of Cruella’s bedroom looks for all the world like a Ming Cho Lee elevation. I’ve always been struck by how Peregoy’s colors are so spot-on specific and manage to evoke a very particular place and time and season that is unmistakably England. My single favorite bit of staging from this period of Disney (1950 to 1968) is the Radcliff kitchen the night of the puppies’ birth, with Rodger and Pongo sitting in anticipation among the cool grays, blues and greens.
Thanks for sharing these Amid!

Colour keys from many animated shorts/films are great to see. It shows us the thought process, not just the final image.
*To Burp… I kinda do see a resemblance to JJ Sempe in these, but his are mostly watercolour illustrations. These also remind me of Ulrikssen’s cartoons (a New Yorker cover artist)
**And to Nate… “Yu rule da school?” :/

Not only is Walt Peregoy a fantastic artist, but I would always enjoy a visit to his upstairs office to listen to him rant about the way the Disney studio was headed downhill. Peregoy was always a joy to spend time with. So much of what he said back then has sadly come to pass.

Amazing, I’m not much into ‘making of’ of old Disney classics beyond what’s on the DVD but I’ve great respect for Disney artists of yesterday. And I’ve always loved the way 101 Dalmatians captured the feeling of Londen in its backgrounds and color scheme. Thanks for sharing.

I own an original painting by Walt Peregoy. I don’t know if it is a print or lithograph but is numbered and signed by him. If you would like to see it email me and I will send a pic.
