It's great to see ephemera like this in the spotlight. The items I feature on www.ephemera.typepad.com dovetail nicely with this post. Just wanted to say I enjoyed seeing this featured on your blog. Very interesting. Nice work.

To the best of my knowledge, yes, those are Keller's. For example, I believe the commercial with the fisherman are his designs (I think I even have an art director annual around here that credits him for that commercial). I'll post a Patin drawing tomorrow from somebody else's collection, which I also believe is a Keller drawing. I also have a hunch that he designed the Sun model sheet for UPA'S OUR MR. SUN (1953) - portion of model sheet is HERE.

I have a question, Amid... In Dan Goodsell's drawing collection, are the drawings with the small hitches in the line by Keller?

Thanks

Those are EXCELLENT drawings, I think. Why would anyone assume he was a poor artist? Are those drawings supposedly bad or something? Because if THOSE are bad, I'm HORRIBLE.

To add to Slowtiger's story, Hubley told me that the film went to Zagreb but disappeared for a week. The animators studied every frame, then returned the print to the exhibitor - suddenly "found."

Lew Keller probably never kew what he started. According to Ronald Holloway in "Z is for Zagreb", a copy of "The four posters" was shown to several artists in Jugoslavia in 1952 - but the film was never released there! The group who saw it had Dusan Vukotic, Vlado Kristl, Zlatko Grgic among others, all famous names in animation now. Against all official resistance (animation was considered a luxury, the money should be spent to build schools) they set up a small studio and produced commercials first, later short films. The UPA designs definitely had a strong influence on them, although they later worked in a variety of styles.
