A background layout by Ed Benedict from DIXIELAND DROOPY, 1954.
(Thanks to Jordan Reichek for the image)
Via YouTube, we can enjoy three shorts that Ed Benedict designed and laid out while working at MGM in the mid-1950s. Ed worked on these immediately prior to doing those Cascade commercial designs I posted yesterday. There’s nothing particularly groundbreaking in the design of the Benedict-era Tex Avery shorts, but they still hold up well and are solid examples of modern animation design.

Hey Amid! I’m so glad to see you’re posting more frequently on here again! I really enjoy all your Cartoon Modern posts, very inspiring. I was sad to see 2 of these animations were pulled off youtube today as I was saving them to watch! ah well.
I also wanted to ask you when I can expect the infamous Cartoon Modern book to begin shipping? I pre-ordered it a couple months ago now and what with it premiering at comic con I’m even more eager and impatient to devour it with my eyes! Keep up the great stuff!
Your #1 Canadian Fan,
Cale

Hey Cale - That’s unfortunate that those cartoons were pulled off YouTube by the owner. Have no idea why the guy took them down. I’d like to start posting some rare material on YouTube myself but I can’t seem to find a free moment to devote to that.
Cartoon Modern should be shipping soon. Last I’ve heard from Chronicle is early-August so it’ll be in your hands soon.

Achi - Thanks for posting those. Good to see the Steinberg commercial online. The “Chinese Baby” Jell-O spot was produced by Ray Patin Productions in LA. I’m not 100% sure who designed the spot, but I know the spot’s agency art director, Jack Sidebotham, had some role in designing it.

Wasn’t the “Chinese Baby” Jell-O spot designed by Mary Blair? If not it certainly looks Mary Blair inspired….
