I like it a lot... but not nearly as much as the first option posted a while back from the original concepts. That one was still the most artistically rendered and looked the classiest. I also agree that the font could be slightly improved upon, but otherwise I think it looks really great.

I'd still push for cover option #1 from your original concepts though! ;)

RE: the comments from folks who say it reminds them of the Gene Deitch cover. That wasn't my decision so I really have no idea if that was a conscious choice by Chronicle to use a similar color. My guess would be no though. In the film that the image is taken from, FIGHT ON FOR OLD, there are only two background colors - white and yellow. The image on the cover though was only line art when Chronicle chose it, and they didn't know there were yellow bgs in the film until I told them about it.

Giles - Thanks for the follow-up post at Foreword blog. I'm glad to hear that you generally like the cover. The book is roughly divided between character design and background paintings, so I thought it'd be nice to get a representation of both on the cover, hence the cityscape on the back.

Hi Amid.
It is a very nice cover but it reminds me, like it did to Rick, of the Gene Deitch book. I also agree with Jeff Pidgeon about font. But do not think that you need a blown up clean up frame from any of the films mentioned in the book. You may want to consider to make the back cover not so different, design wise, from the cover, so you may have a continuation, a "flow" if you wish between the two. Just an idea. Can't wait to have the book on my hands!!

Hi Amid,
It's a good cover design, but I think it could be stronger. I agree with the font comment - it doesn't feel very fifties or sixties. Considering how strong the design work is in the films the book will probably cover, you might want to consider a blown-up/cleaned-up frame from Gerald McBoing Boing or Flebus or something.

I don't really like it. The typography needs to be reworked, it's not refined enough, not all that close to most animation typographies used in the fifties. I also found the back cover to be a lot more interesting than the front, which could use some extra details. The composition is a bit too rectangular, it could be more dynamic.
