Introducing the Cartoon Modern Cover
As you may recall, I put out a call for help last December asking readers to offer their suggestions on the cover for CARTOON MODERN. Well, Chronicle and I took everybody’s suggestions, gave them due consideration, and then did something completely different, though I have a feeling that everybody’s comments did help instill a stronger sense of direction in finding an approach. Also, as I discovered, the cover is the one part of the book where everybody at Chronicle wants to have their say. It was a true balancing act trying to achieve a cover that pleased me as well as the folks at Chronicle. Here’s a tip of the hat to Chronicle designer/art director Brett MacFadden, who had to take in a lot of different opinions, including way too many from me, and somehow manage to pull it all together into an elegant package.
Before I unveil the cover, here’s an interesting fact I learned about Chronicle Books which I did not previously know: Chronicle has a ‘cover board,’ a mysterious group of individuals that I know very little about, except that they really really like the color yellow. And I mean, REALLY.
I’d love to hear everybody’s opinions on the cover—positive, negative and everything in between. (PS: The image quality will improve in the final printed version.)

Looks awesome. Now that’s buyable, hehe

Hi: Congratulations. I love it. It brings me back to the McBoing Boing show, of course. The yellow is a good one (if it the one on my monitor is true), and I think the character colors are also controlled well to not distract from the title. It’s good, and you should be happy with it. It’s certainly a book I would notice and pick up in a book store.

I love it: a very neat choice. Perhaps you could have used some font in the style of the hand lettering you often find in these cartoons, but even the one you finally chose is good too. I look forward to having the real thing in my hands!

I really think it turned out very nice! I love it. One thing I’ve always noticed about Chronicle is that the design development of their books is very, very strong. I am happy to say soon I will be doing a book with Chronicle as well and I know the final product will be of the top quality. Wonderful work yet again. I really look forward to its release!
Best,
Steve

Excellent job! It will look nice next to the Gene Deitch “The Cat on a Hot Thin Groove” book. Can’t wait to get it!

Cool cover! I want my copy now. I use to hang out at UPA back in the fifties when I was a starstruck kid. Nice job, Amid.

I like this cover a lot! It really makes me want to look inside.
Comment by Eric Sturdevant — March 16, 2006 @ 10:09 am
My first reaction is that it’s a little safe when compared to the complexity of the original choices, but for sales purposes I’m sure that’s a good thing. The image on the back cover is underwhelming (why not a BG that depicts some modern structures?), but anyone who gets that far will look inside, and by then you’ve got ‘em.
I like the clear, playful characters on the front. And hey, don’t the first and last guys in that line have the “u-shaped” closed eyelids that John K. invented?
Comment by Kevin — March 16, 2006 @ 10:17 am
I like it.
A lot. It’s got a terrific, simple image that says “cartoon” as clearly as the title font, and that yellow…I would never have thought of it, but seeing it, I think it’s terrific.
This definitely has the look of a book that will attract people. Nice job!

Looks great AMID, I was a bit concerned when you posted the runner ups awhile back. Each previous design had some great elements but I would say that this final one pulled together very nice.
I look forward to picking up a copy….soon?
and how about that Animation Blast??
=)

If I ever doubted, now I know I have to have this book. A really wonderful promise-of-fun design!

I love it, Amid. I like it far more than any of the previous choices you had. There’s something to be said for simplicity.

Hey Amid!
That’s an awesome cover….for an awesome book… Can’t wait to get it, Amid…YOU ROCK!
Comment by Ramin — March 16, 2006 @ 11:21 am
I like the colors, and the back page is great how you implemented the bg into the design. great work. Yellow might not be first color that comes to mind for a cover, but it will definitely stand out amongst all the “safer” choices of other books, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Great, I only can repeat myself: Can’t wait!
Comment by Thorsten Hasenkamm — March 16, 2006 @ 1:52 pm
This turned out super, Amid! I once designed a comedy record cover that was primarily yellow. It was rejected by the comedian who said someone told him yellow never sells. Cherrios!–Yoe

Hey Amid, I don’t buy animation books very often (maybe 2 or 3 in the past five years) but this one is a must. Can’t wait to get it.

Comment by Lane Smith — March 16, 2006 @ 3:17 pm
I agree with Kevin on the back image, nice city background but not as “Cartoon Modern” as I would like. The font for the banner is ok, a little more hand lettered and not just a straight font choice would be better. It looks like the designer had the old Blue Note album cover design book out. Overall the color and composition looks good! I’m just nick-picking.
Comment by J. Michael — March 16, 2006 @ 3:55 pm
I think this is really nice. I get the feeling this cover could be FROM the 50s. The colours and layout have a 50s flavour…and the typeface choices totally support that. This whole cover could have been designed without a computer/software. I think this is exactly the right approach. Good stuff!

YES!
It looks great. I can’t wait to stroke the cover lovingly (oh boy, too much information).
Comment by Kino Kid — March 16, 2006 @ 5:36 pm
I was thinking maybe you could outline the word modern so that it didn’t seem as though it were drowning in the admirably bold yellow background. Perhaps you could use a similar inking style as the one used to draw the marching band below. Just a thought? (though I’m partially color blind…)

I think it’s great—really reflects the content and has a positive fun energy that’s always a plus when trying to get someone to purchase it. The yellow will pop on the bookstands. Koo-doughs!

Comment by Clay Sisk — March 17, 2006 @ 10:22 am
Thanks to everybody who has wrote in so far. I’m happy to hear that so many people like it.
Ira - Update on Blast #9 will be on CartoonBrew next week. It’s very nearly off to the printer.
Kevin - RE: why there wasn’t a background with more modern builldings on the back cover. … A lot of that had to do with the artwork available, and also taking into account how the art could be used in the layout. There’s actually an incredible modern citscape in the book, by Eyvind Earle, but I only had the image as a 35mm frame scan and not the original bg, so the quality wouldn’t hold up for the back cover. Of course, in defense of the Bob McIntosh bg currently on the back, despite the traditional buildings, his execution of them (the flat color treatment and layout) is quite modern.
Jerry - The character on the spine-Milton Muffet-is from Bobe Cannon’s THE JAYWALKER (1956). The character has a terrifically unique walk cycle and this is one of the drawings from that cycle.

Nice. Congratulations! Although the book cover immediately reminded me of this book: http://www.lastgasp.com/pics/cathot.jpg
Comment by Rick. — March 19, 2006 @ 2:14 pm
I don’t really like it. The typography needs to be reworked, it’s not refined enough, not all that close to most animation typographies used in the fifties. I also found the back cover to be a lot more interesting than the front, which could use some extra details. The composition is a bit too rectangular, it could be more dynamic.
Comment by frncs — March 20, 2006 @ 1:44 pm
Hi Amid,
It’s a good cover design, but I think it could be stronger. I agree with the font comment - it doesn’t feel very fifties or sixties. Considering how strong the design work is in the films the book will probably cover, you might want to consider a blown-up/cleaned-up frame from Gerald McBoing Boing or Flebus or something.
Comment by Jeff Pidgeon — March 20, 2006 @ 2:57 pm
Hi Amid.
It is a very nice cover but it reminds me, like it did to Rick, of the Gene Deitch book. I also agree with Jeff Pidgeon about font. But do not think that you need a blown up clean up frame from any of the films mentioned in the book. You may want to consider to make the back cover not so different, design wise, from the cover, so you may have a continuation, a “flow” if you wish between the two. Just an idea. Can’t wait to have the book on my hands!!

I wish the subtitle was straightened out. Otherwise: very nice.

Cartoon Modern: Final Cover
Todd wrote tonight, asking: My memory fails me, didn’t you blog about this a while back? …[I]t would be worth posting an update, the cover is looking great. Yes, I did — and couldn’t agree more, it is looking great:…
Trackback by Foreword — March 27, 2006 @ 6:28 pm
RE: the comments from folks who say it reminds them of the Gene Deitch cover. That wasn’t my decision so I really have no idea if that was a conscious choice by Chronicle to use a similar color. My guess would be no though. In the film that the image is taken from, FIGHT ON FOR OLD, there are only two background colors - white and yellow. The image on the cover though was only line art when Chronicle chose it, and they didn’t know there were yellow bgs in the film until I told them about it.
Giles - Thanks for the follow-up post at Foreword blog. I’m glad to hear that you generally like the cover. The book is roughly divided between character design and background paintings, so I thought it’d be nice to get a representation of both on the cover, hence the cityscape on the back.

eeek I liked the other covers better…
Comment by mig — April 11, 2006 @ 12:07 pm
I like it a lot… but not nearly as much as the first option posted a while back from the original concepts. That one was still the most artistically rendered and looked the classiest. I also agree that the font could be slightly improved upon, but otherwise I think it looks really great.
I’d still push for cover option #1 from your original concepts though!
