This is a UPA background by Bob McIntosh for an early-1950s TV commercial or industrial film. I haven’t been able to identify what it was for, but it was likely done around the time he first arrived at the studio in 1952.

Great. This is a perfect example of the difference between knowledgable distortion and “wonkiness”. The latter represents a lot of the so-called designy background work that is being done in animation currently. Full of arbitrary angles and random lines. What makes this background so great is that at a quick glance everything seems natural and only when one really starts to analyse the composition do you see the flatness. Also I like how the different objects look like they are made of different surfaces; like the trees. They contrast so nicely with the buildings. And look at how clearly the sign reads. You don’t see work like that much anymore.
